Dr. Kaufman is the Associate Professor of Contemporary American Jewish Studies on the Los Angeles campus since 2000 and a tenured member of the faculty since 2006. He has been a consultant for the restoration of synagogues in Boston, Hartford, Baltimore and Los Angeles, and is currently the head of a research project for Synagogue 3000 on the subject of sacred space, i.e., synagogue design and renovation. On an administrative level, Dr. Kaufman will be co-chairing the WASC accreditation process for the LA campus over the next few years. In addition to his many publications and presentations, and eclectic interests, Dr. Kaufman is currently working on a book about Jewish celebrities in the early 1960’s, focusing on the rise to fame of Sandy Koufax, Lenny Bruce, Bob Dylan and Barbara Streisand.

Prior to joining the faculty of HUC-JIR, Dr. Kafuman served as an adjunct professor of American Jewish History at Hebrew College, Brown University, University of Massachusetts at Amherst, The Jewish Theological Seminary of America, and City University of New York (Baruch, Queens and York Colleges).
