Director of Ministry Formation, Calvin Theological Seminary

B.A., Calvin College, 1975
M.Div., Calvin Theological Seminary, 1984

Don Byker began his professional life in social work with troubled teens and autistic children. When he decided to enter Calvin Theological Seminary, it was a response to a call to ministry that dates back to his childhood. After graduating with a Master of Divinity, Don served as a pastor for two Christian Reformed churches in Roselawn, IN, and Rehoboth, NM. In between these calls, Don was in Grand Rapids serving as Wedgwood Christian Services’ first chaplain. Don feels delighted and honored to be in the position of directing the field education program, and advising students at Calvin Theological Seminary.

“Given my various moves in ministry, I am especially thankful for the ways in which these experiences have shaped and formed me as a person and a pastor. I believe that God has called me to Calvin Theological Seminary to serve in the ministry of helping to form men and women to serve in Christ’s church and God’s kingdom. It is my privilege to guide and assist students in designing, implementing, and reflecting on moving experiences in ministry. With the blessing of the Holy Spirit, these experiences contribute profoundly to their formation as spirit-filled, equipped servant-leaders. At their best, these experiences challenge men and women to reflect deeply about God’s word as persons called to be redeeming agents in God’s world.”

Don is now working towards his Doctor of Ministry degree in Christian Spirituality at Fuller Theological Seminary. He is married to Donna, and they have two daughters and two sons. Don is an active member of his church, serving as a shepherding elder. He also enjoys working in his vegetable garden and fixing things that are broken.
