Gil studies the church, ministry and religion using social and ecological perspectives. The rural and small town churches facing social change are a particular concern of his, along with ecological theology and the church’s response to environmental crisis. He has also taught courses about the emerging church, ecumenical ministries, urban ministry, and other topics in religion and culture. He teaches in both on-campus and online formats.

As director of the Town and Country Church Institute, Gil oversees the concentrated studies of rural and small church ministries. He enjoys preaching, speaking, and sharing music in congregations, camps and conferences.
