Senior Consultant for the Center for Anglican Communion Studies, Virginia Theological Seminary

The Rt. Rev. J. Mark Dyer is currently Professor of Theology and Mission and Senior Consultant for the Center for Anglican Communion Studies at Virginia Seminary.

He earned his B.A. Magna cum laude from St. Anselm College, Manchester, New Hampshire – B.A. in 1959. Studied Contemporary Philosophy at University of Louvain, Belgium from1957-59 and earned his MTh, STL and completed his doctoral work at the University of Ottawa, Canada. In addition Bishop Dyer was honored with a D.D. from the Episcopal Seminary of the Southwest, Texas,1989 and Muhlenberg College, Allentown, Pennsylvania – - D.D., 1990.
Bishop Dyer was professed a monk of St. Anselm Abbey (Benedictine), Manchester, New Hampshire, July 11, 1960 and Ordained Priest of St. Anselm Abbey, August 25, 1963. He entered Anglican Church of Canada – St. Matthew’s Anglican Church, Ottawa, September 1969 and was received as a priest of the Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Massachusetts, June 15, 1971.

Bishop Dyer has served the Anglican Communion as a member of Steering Committee for the Lambeth Conference, 1988; The Archbishop of Canterbury’s Commission on Communion and Women in the Episcopate, 1988; Inter-Anglican Theological and Doctrinal Commission – 1994; The Anglican Consultative Council – 1993 – 1999;
Design Committee for Lambeth Conference 1998; (Chair, Editorial Committee, Lambeth Conference, 1998); Lambeth Commission 2004and Co-Chair of the Anglican-Orthodox Theological Dialogue, 1990 -2007 which produced an agreed statement on the theology of the Church, The Church of the Triune God..

Bishop Dyer is married to Dr. Amelia J. Dyer and they have four children and two grandchildren. He enjoys music, films, sports, and literature.
