Born in Malta Bend, MO, raised in Rosebud, MO, his elementary, secondary, college, and seminary education was in schools operated by The LC-MS (Immanuel Lutheran Day School, Rosebud, MO; St. Paul’s High School and College, Concordia, MO; Concordia Senior College, Ft. Wayne, IN; and Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, MO).

After completion of two master’s degrees in theology – the Master of Divinity and the Master of Sacred Theology – he was ordained in 1966 and served twelve years consecutively as pastor in two parishes, Peace Lutheran Church in Selah, WA, and St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Salem, OR. Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, called him to begin his service in theological education, spanning sixteen years of leadership as professor, director of several administrative divisions, Academic Dean, and Acting President. During this time he also served as an assisting pastor at Christ Memorial Lutheran Church in Affton, MO, for almost ten years, and completed his Doctor of Philosophy degree in Historical Theology at St. Louis University, St. Louis, MO.

Dr. Hempelmann became the third president of Concordia Lutheran Seminary, Edmonton, AB in 1993, serving for six years and leading the seminary to full accreditation without notation by The Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada. After completing twenty-one years of service in theological education, he accepted the call in 1999 to be Director of Pastoral Education, Board for Higher Education, The Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod. He was called by the Board for Pastoral Education to serve as Executive Director after its formation in 2004. He brings over forty-one years of leadership experience in teaching and scholarship, educational administration, and pastoral ministry in The Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod and Lutheran Church–Canada.

Dr. Hempelmann is the author of numerous articles, essays, and reviews appearing in professional and theological journals, and in church publications. He has contributed chapters to three books on the themes of pastoral theology, stewardship, administration, education, and worship. Currently he is writing a commentary for Concordia Publishing House on The Pastoral Epistles in the new Concordia Commentary Series. He has served as guest lecturer at Luther Seminary, Seoul, Korea; Kobe Lutheran Seminary, Kobe, Japan; and Luther Seminary, Adelaide, Australia. Membership in professional societies includes the Society of Biblical Literature, the American Society of Church History, North American Patristics Society, Society for Advancement of Continuing Education for Ministry, and the Association of Practical Theology.

Dr. Hempelmann is married to Catherine, who graduated from Barnes Hospital School of Nursing in St. Louis, Missouri. Rev. and Mrs. Hempelmann are the parents of three children: Cheryl and Michael of St. Louis, Missouri, and Lisa of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. There are seven grandchildren.
