B.D. cum laude, Union Theological Seminary in Virginia, 1962

Louis H. Zbinden joined the faculty in 2003. He came to Austin Seminary after retiring from thirty-years as senior pastor of First Presbyterian Church in San Antonio, Texas. In 2002, First Presbyterian Church established The Louis H. and Katherine S. Zbinden Chair of Pastoral Ministry and Leadership. Zbinden became the first to hold the chair the following year.

A 1962 graduate of Union Theological Seminary, Zbinden was ordained in the Presbyterian Church in 1963. He was pastor of Augusta Stone Presbyterian Church in Fort Defiance, Virginia, from 1963-1967, and pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Lenoir, North Carolina, from 1967-1971.

Zbinden has served on several boards and committees associated with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), such as the board of Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, the board of the Presbyterian Outlook, and the Presbyterian Outreach Foundation. He was also directly responsible for two outreach ministries that serve the homeless: the San Antonio Metropolitan Ministries (SAMM) and the Christian Assistance Ministry (CAM).

In January of 2005, Zbinden, and his wife, Katherine (“Kip”), visited Justo Mwale Theological College in Lusaka, Zambia, for three months. Zbinden taught at the college, and plans to return and teach there as a visiting professor again in the future.
