Roger Schroeder was ordained in 1979 as a member of the Society of the Divine Word (S.V.D.) after which he worked as a missionary for six years in Papua New Guinea. Upon earning a Doctorate in Missiology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, Schroeder began teaching at Catholic Theological Union. He has been at CTU since 1990.
Roger Schroeder is co-author, with Stephen Bevans, S.V.D., of Constants in Context: A Theology of Mission for Today (2004, Asian edition 2005, Indonesian translation 2006, Spanish translation 2009 forthcoming, Chinese translation in progress). This book received the Third Place Award in the category of “Theology” by the Catholic Press Association for 2004 titles, and it was included on the list of “Fifteen Outstanding Books of 2004 for Mission Studies” by the International Bulletin of Missionary Research. Roger Schroeder is also the author of What is the Mission of the Church? A Guide for Catholics (2008) and Initiation and Religion: A Case Study from the Wosera of Papua New Guinea (1992). He has co-edited with Stephen Bevans Word Remembered, Word Proclaimed (1997) and Mission for the 21st Century (2001, Indonesian translation 2002). He is currently writing a book with the working title of “A History of Christianity from a Global Perspective.”
His recent articles include: “International Priests: Different Understandings of Sexualityand Gender Roles” in New Theology Review (2009); With Stephen Bevans, “We Were Gentle Among You: Christian Mission in Dialogue” in Australian Ejournal (2006), and “Missiology after Bosch: Reverencing a Classic by Moving Beyond” in International
Bulletin of Missionary Research (2005); “Women, Mission, and the Early Franciscan Movement” in Missiology (2000); “Entering Someone Else’s Garden: Cross-Cultural Mission/Ministry” in The Healing Circle: Essays in Cross-Cultural Mission, Bevans, Doidge, and Schreiter, eds.(2000). Schroeder has also written about twenty-five book reviews. He is a consultant for the “History of the World Christian Movement” project of Pittsburgh Theological Seminary and Orbis Books since 1999.
Roger Schroeder has given talks and workshops in Australia, China, Hong Kong, Ireland, Jamaica, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Taiwan, the United States, and Vietnam. During his sabbatical in 2009-2010, he will be lecturing and serving as a resource person in Indonesia, Australia and South Africa. He was appointed Coordinator of Anthropos Institute (international network of SVD specialists in social and religious sciences) for the term of 2007-2010. He is a member of the following professional associations: Association of Professors of Mission (President, 1997-1998), American Society of Missiology (Board of Publications 2006-2009), Midwest Fellowship of Professors of Mission (President 1992-1993, 2006-2007), International Association of Mission Studies, U.S. Catholic Mission Association, and Anthropos Institute.
